China arrests nearly 1,000 doomsday 'cult' members: Source: www.sinodaily.com - Friday, December 21, 2012
China has arrested nearly 1,000 people in a crackdown on a Christian
sect that spread doomsday rumours and targeted communist rule, state
media said Thursday ahead of the supposedly Mayan-foretold apocalypse.
The Christian-inspired group "Almighty God" has been accused of
spreading doomsday rumours apparently linked to the ancient Mayan Long
Count calendar and urging followers to slay the "red dragon" of
communism, state media reports said.
Close to 1,000 followers of the sect, which state-run media labels an
"evil cult" -- the same description it applies to the banned Falun Gong
group -- have been held in a nationwide crackdown that began last week,
state-run CCTV reported.
Police detained more than 350 Almighty God members in the southwestern
province of Guizhou, while in the northwestern province of Qinghai more
than 400 were held for "gathering unlawfully", the Beijing Times
reported.
Smaller numbers have been held in other areas across the country.
Almighty God predicts that three days of darkness will begin on Friday,
and has called on its members to overthrow China's ruling Communist
Party, which it refers to as "the big red dragon", the state-run Global
Times reported.
It has also told believers that a new era presided over by a "female
Jesus" has arrived and that tsunamis and earthquakes will rock the
world, the Global Times said.
The apocalypse predictions have received widespread coverage in China,
thanks in part to the success of the Hollywood disaster film "2012",
which was inspired by the supposed Mayan prophecy.
Chinese state-run media have condemned the group in lurid detail, with
the China Youth Daily reporting that Almighty God "even uses 'sex
communication', calling on female members to use their sex appeal to
seduce single men".
The sect was founded in the early 1990s, but has remained secretive in
the face of government intolerance of non-official religious groups.
Group members use pseudonyms such as "Little White Rabbit" or "Doggy" to
conceal their identities, and are often not allowed to carry mobile
phones or other communication devices, China Business View magazine
reported.
China's Communist Party does not tolerate challenges to its authority
and has brutally cracked down on religious groups that refuse to toe the
party line, including the Buddhist-inspired Falun Gong, which was
banned in the late 1990s.
Authorities were shocked when Falun Gong was able to quietly mass
thousands of silent protesters at key symbolic locations including
Beijing's Tiananmen Square and the central leadership compound of
Zhongnanhai.
China has a long history of religiously-inspired anti-government
movements, most notably the nineteenth century "Taiping Heavenly
Kingdom", led by a Christian convert who gathered millions of followers
in an attempt to overthrow the emperor.
Earlier this week CCTV quoted police in Qinghai as saying their
investigation into the Almighty God sect was related to stability
maintenance and would be linked to "our anti-self-immolation fight".
The comment was a reference to nearly 100 Tibetans setting themselves on
fire since 2009 in protest at China's rule of its Tibetan-inhabited
regions, which include Qinghai.

PSY - GANGNAM STYLE (강남스타일) M/V
'Gangnam Style' Hits 1 Billion YouTube Views
- By Damon Poeter
- December 21, 2012 08:34pm EST
Already the most popular video in YouTube history, Gangnam Style on Friday became the first to achieve 1 billion views on the Google-owned video-sharing site.
So while the world didn't end on Dec. 21 as some were predicting, surely this counts towards the Apocalypse in some small way, right?
The official video (below) for South Korean rapper-singer PSY's infectious, goofy-dance-driven hit was uploaded to YouTube on July 15. In just over five months, "Gangnam Style" eclipsed such YouTube mega-hits Justin Bieber's "Baby" (currently at 813.5 million views), Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor" (632.7 million views), and the venerable "Charlie Bit My Finger" (502.9 million views).
The viral video also spawned a pop culture movement in the United States and elsewhere, with athletes, celebrities, and even Google chairman Eric Schmidt busting out signature "Gangnam Style" dance moves in various public venues over the past several months.
How unlikely was it that a song name-dropping Seoul's Gangnam District and sung almost entirely in a language with less than 100 million native speakers would become a worldwide smash hit of such unimaginable magnitude? We'll leave it to others to dissect the obviously winning formula of "Gangnam Style," but as the Verge notes, the success of the video is certainly "a testament to just how deeply technology is rooted in our culture" and the raw power of runaway Internet memes.
Meanwhile, PSY's mega-hit has been dropping other YouTube records like flies during its meteoric run on the video site. "Gangnam Style" passed Bieber's "Baby" as the most-viewed video on YouTube on Nov. 24. The video also had a record 6.2 million likes on YouTube as of Friday evening. Amazingly, "Gangnam Style" has less than 450,000 dislikes on the site, for a like-to-dislike ratio approaching 14:1. By comparison, "Baby" currently has about 1.5 million likes but also 3.3 million dislikes.
"Gangnam Style" is the lead single on PSY's sixth K-pop album, the six-track PSY 6 (Six Rules), Part 1 (that's a lot of 6's, just to circle back on the Apocalypse thing). A companion album, PSY 6 (Six Rules), Part 2, is set for release in March. For all the success of the "Gangnam Style" video, the album itself has sold less than 100,000 copies in South Korea, according to reports.
Man of Steel - Official Trailer #2 [HD]
From Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures comes "Man of Steel", starring Henry Cavill, directed by Zach Snyder. The film also stars Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, Henry Lennix, Christopher Meloni and Laurence Fishburne. In theaters June 14.

Man of Steel is an upcoming American superhero film directed by Zack Snyder, produced by Christopher Nolan and scripted by David S. Goyer. Based on the DC Comics character Superman, the film will be a reboot of the Superman film series, portraying the character's origin story. The film stars Henry Cavill in the title role, with Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Michael Shannon as General Zod.
Development of Man of Steel began in 2008 when Warner Bros. Pictures took pitches from comic book writers, screenwriters and directors, opting to reboot the franchise. In 2009, a court ruling resulted in Jerry Siegel's family recapturing the rights to Superman's origins and Siegel's copyright. The decision stated that Warner Bros. did not owe the families additional royalties from previous films, but if they did not begin production on a Superman film by 2011, then the Shuster and Siegel estates would be able to sue for lost revenue on an unproduced film. Nolan pitched Goyer's idea after story discussion on The Dark Knight Rises. Snyder was hired as director in October 2010. Principal photography started in August 2011 in West Chicago before moving to Plano and Vancouver. The film is scheduled to be released on June 14, 2013, in conventional, 3D[4] and IMAX theaters.[5]

Pacific Rim Official Trailer
Pacific Rim is an upcoming science fiction film directed by Guillermo del Toro from a screenplay by Travis Beacham and del Toro. The film is set in a world where soldiers piloting giant robots battle against giant monsters who have mysteriously risen from beneath the ocean. Del Toro has said the film will be "a beautiful poem to giant monsters".[1]
The film will be released in 3-D and IMAX 3D on July 12, 2013.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, start rising from the sea, a war begins that takes millions of lives and consumes humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon is devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers prove nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Elementary school cafeteria worker Fired for feeding student who couldn't afford school lunch
Source: fox2now.com
WEBSTER GROVES, MO. -- A school cafeteria worker is out of a job after giving away free meals to a child in need. For two years, Dianne Brame worked as a cafeteria manager at Hudson Elementary in Webster Groves, keeping kids’ bellies full for their all-important task of learning.
The lunch lady loved her job: “I knew kids by their names, I knew their likes and dislikes, so it was just fun.”
But recently, she came across a fourth grader who consistently came without money.
She says he used to be on the free lunch program, but language barriers got in the way of reapplying: “I sent them paperwork so that they could get back in contact with me, but it didn’t happen,” she says.
For days, Brame snuck the boy lunches.
She explains, “I let his account get over $45 which I’m only supposed to let it get over $10, and I started letting him come through my lunch line without putting his number in, and they look at that as stealing.
I thought it was just taking care of a kid.”
She was trying to protect him from the bullying: a cruel side dish to the default cheese sandwich given to kids without lunch money.
“The kids would ridicule and tell them, ah you don’t have any money, that’s why you have to eat cheese sandwiches every day,” Brame says.
On Tuesday, word got around to Brame’s supervisor, who put her between a rock and a hard place: either leave, or move to another school in a demoted position.
The 60 year-old former manager felt she didn’t have a choice.
“My husband died in February, I lost my home, car got repo’ed,” she explains, “Hudson is in walking distance from me, so I took the firing.
Fire me.”
Gary Woodruff, whose daughter attends Hudson Elementary, finds the punishment to be harsh: “It just seems a little excessive that they would do that to a lunch lady, I mean it’s a little bit ridiculous, especially nowadays with the economy and what not.”
Now, jobless and with the holidays right around the corner, Brame is on a tighter budget—giving cookies instead of pricier presents.
According to Brame’s employer, she does have the opportunity to appeal the decision.
But Brame says she doesn’t want to bother, especially because she knows she violated protocol.
Looking back, she says she wouldn’t change a thing: “I don’t think any kid should be hungry.
I don’t. And it’s my belief that some of these kids who go to school and get meals, that may be the only meal they eat that day.”

Red Bull Stratos - freefall from the edge of space

Felix Baumgartner sets new records by successfully skydiving from 24 miles high
By: Pete Thomas, GrindTV.com
Felix Baumgartner stepped out of the space capsule an astonishing 24 miles above earth, or about three times the cruising altitude of jetliners. The skydiver plummeted for 4:22 seconds, but it seemed an eternity, because his faceplate was fogging up on the way down as he fell through harsh atmospheric conditions at a dizzying speed.
At 48 seconds into his jump he reached a speed upwards of 729 mph, a new record for a skydiver, but it's still unclear whether he officially broke the sound barrier.
He also broke the record for the highest manned balloon flight, unofficially reaching a height just shy of 25 miles. He did so in a balloon that's the largest ever manned.
Baumgartner's long-anticipated leap Sunday, from the edge of space at an altitude of 128,000 feet, was the Austrian daredevil's attempt at breaking several records, most notably the highest successful jump and becoming the only skydiver to break the sound barrier.
The sound barrier record, if he reached it, will have come 65 years to the day after Chuck Yeager, flying in his X-1A, first broke the barrier.
As Baumgartner opened the hatch of his capsule and stepped out onto the platform, he said before jumping, "I wish the world could see what I see right now."
The Red Bull Stratos project had been seven years in the making. Baumgartner, 43, made the leap while wearing a pressurized space suit. He jumped from a pressurized capsule that was hoisted toward the heavens above Roswell, New Mexico, by a towering white stratospheric balloon.
During the marathon free-fall, Baumgartner's speed of 700 plus mph came while passing through sub-freezing air zones. While falling, he was communicating with mission control that his visor was fogging up, which is the likely reason behind his early parachute deployment. As a result, Joseph Kittinger will hold onto his 52-year-old record of the longest free fall.
The epic jump, the team has maintained, represents more than a mere stunt. Extensive research that went into this mission is expected to help scientists design safer and more effective space suits for future astronauts.
Family and friends were on hand, with his mother, Eva, describing the feat as Baumgartner's "biggest dream coming true."
Baumgartner, whose mission was planned cautiously and meticulously by a team of scientists, shattered a 52-year-old skydiving altitude record of 102,800 feet. That belonged to Joseph Kittinger, a former U.S. Air Force colonel, who joined the Red Bull Stratos project as chief of flight operations and safety.
Last March the skydiver and famous BASE jumper made a preparation jump from 71,580 feet (more than 13 miles) above Roswell. During that leap he set a world free-fall speed record of 364.4 mph. The free-fall spanned 3 minutes, 43 seconds, and included a plunge through temperatures as cold as minus-75 degrees.
Baumgartner became so cold that he could hardly move his hands, and the free-fall was so long that he had to fight the urge to deploy the parachute too early.
Remarkably, two others had survived jumps from similar altitudes--both in the 1960s. They were Russia's Eugene Andreev and American Joseph Kittinger.
In July Baumgartner made his final test jump, from 97,146 feet, also in Roswell.
The balloon was launched from the back of a pickup truck. For 52 years Kittinger, who also wore a pressurized suit, held the distinction of taking what had been described as "the highest step in the world."
It was during an era in which nobody knew whether a human could survive a jump from the edge of space. A handful of people died while trying to beat Kittinger's record.
Before Sunday's jump, Baumgartner said of the mental struggles: "You get claustrophobic fast in the pressurized suit. You start to let your mind go, and you think of people who lost their lives trying to do what Joe Kittinger did. You have to get your mind in a different place. Count backwards ... whatever you have to do."
Kittinger added: "Of course it's not easy. It takes a special combination [of talent]. The best partner you can have is Felix Baumgartner."

Big Brother: RFID Chips Track Kids' Truancy, Eating Habits
"The digital tracking and surveillance of school-aged kids has been growing.
Much attention has been given to the phenomenon of corporate tracking of kids' online activities, activities that violate the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The law, originally adopted in 1998, requires Web sites aimed at kids to get parental consent befoSre gathering information about those users who are under 13 years. Many companies, including a Disney subsidiary, have violated it. Corporate marketing interests, most notably Facebook, are fighting proposed revisions to COPPA.
A second front in the tracking of young people has gotten far less attention. Schools across the country are adopting a variety of different tools to monitor students both in school and outside school. Among these tools are RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags embedded in school ID cards, GPS tracking software in computers, and even CCTV video camera systems. According to school authorities, these tools are being adopted not to simply increase security, but to prevent truancy, cut down on theft and even improve students' eating habits."* Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break down the idea of tagging and tracking children.

Google acquires Instagram-competitor Snapseed
Google acquires Instagram-competitor Snapseed:
Nik Software, the company behind the popular photography app Snapseed, has been bought by Google today. The search giant plans to bolster its Google+ photo features with the Snapseed acquisition and compete with Facebook and Instagram head on. The app, which is available on iOS, Mac and Windows (with an Android version coming soon), has gained over nine million users within its first year.
To compete with the likes of Facebook and Instagram, Google has added some great image-editing features to Google+ over the past year or so. Features like facial recognition for improved photo tagging and higher-resolution photos are just some of the updates that Google has focused on. Snapseed-like photo editing in the Google+ would certainly put it on par with Facebook and Instagram’s photo capabilities.
Nik Software has been around for almost 17 years creating all sorts of photography software. Snapseed has been one of their more successful projects and it’s easy to see why. The company has made “photography first” their motto and is certain that they will be able to spread their message to millions more with this Google acquisition.
It’s not known exactly what new photo features will come to Google+ with the Snapseed buyout, but Senior Vice President of Engineering at Google+ Vic Gundotra says that they “want to help our users create photos they absolutely love, and in our experience Nik does this better than anyone.” It’ll be interesting to see what Google+ comes up with to further challenge Facebook and Instagram.

HTC One X 5-inch phablet leaked to take on Note
HTC One X 5-inch phablet leaked to take on Note:
If you’re a fan of the Samsung Galaxy Note or the LG Intuition, 5-inch displays and all, you’ll be happy to see the competition continue to mount up with a new addition to the phablet universe from HTC. The following render and a bit of information leaked on the device lead us to believe that HTC will be taking the tall route – a 5-inch display with a whole lot more height than its got width. This device is ready for your palm, if this render is to be believed, while it still delivers a massive display and the full gamut of HTC One greatness – greatness we know and love.
Inside this device you’ll very likely be seeing a dual-core processor from Qualcomm if not the S4 Pro, a quad-core next-level processor from the Snapdragon masters. This device also looks very much to be sporting red flare like we’ve seen on a large cross-section of Verizon/HTC devices which makes us think that there may be some 4G LTE in this monster’s future. This device has also been called the DLX and the 6435LVW.
This device has three capacitive buttons up front near the bottom, a lovely speaker grill up top, and a center-top-mounted camera at the back that will almost certainly be at least 8 megapixels strong. You’ll likely be working with this device with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or – do we dare hope – Android 4.1 Jelly Bean by the end of this year.
This device may very well be shown off at the September 19th event in NYC that’ll have HTC showing off “what’s next”, whatever that may be. Here in this behemoth we’re inclined to believe that HTC is not aiming to be the last one left out of the phablet party. What say you?

Seeking a Reversal of Fortune, Zynga Gets A Bit Lucky
Seeking a Reversal of Fortune, Zynga Gets A Bit Lucky:
Zynga is announcing this afternoon that it has acquired A Bit Lucky, a small game studio that is focused on making “mid-core” games.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it is likely a fairly small deal given that the 20-plus team had raised roughly $8 million in capital over its three years of operations.
To be sure, Zynga is looking for a catalyst to revive its stock, and maybe an acquisition that will allow it to expand beyond light social entertainment into a new genre of games will help.
In an interview, Zynga’s General Manager Bill Jackson said the acquisition will help bolster the company’s ability to make games that appeal to more hardcore players, something it had already been working on internally.
Frederic Descamps, A Bit Lucky’s CEO, said Zynga’s vision for the genre was closely aligned with their roadmap.
“We started as a social games on Facebook, but a few months ago we changed directions to mid-core gaming. Over the past few months, we we’ve been talking about what’s next for us, and how do we make mid-core multiplatform games. In the end, it was pretty clear that it was the best choice of us,” he said.
A Bit Lucky had launched two Facebook games, Lucky Train and Lucky Space. Those two games were shut down recently to focus on its new game, Solstice Arena, which has not launched yet. When it does launch, it will work across multiple platforms, including some combination of mobile, PC and tablet.
While mid-core gaming can have a number of definitions, Descamps said that this is a real-time multiplayer battle game that will be played by gamers across multiple platforms.
Descamps said he was not concerned that Zynga’s mostly casual userbase would not overlap well with the more hardcore users it was seeking.
“I believe Zynga’s audience is several times the size of my country,” said the French native. “They have all sorts of players. I play all kinds of Zynga games, even though I’m a super hardcore player,” he said.
Here is the note that Descamps and Jordan Maynard, the chief creative officer and CTO of A Bit Lucky, plan to send out this afternoon:

Jordan and I have a great piece of news: A Bit Lucky and Zynga are teaming up! Today, Zynga is announcing the acquisition of A Bit Lucky and, as of this week, all 20+ of A Bit Lucky’s employees will become part of Zynga San Francisco.
After exploring various options and talking to a lot of interested partners, Jordan and I are convinced Zynga is the best choice for us. Zynga sees something very special in A Bit Lucky and the team we have assembled.
Likewise, why we picked Zynga is pretty simple: it was truly a meeting of the minds. At Zynga, we met people like us: passionate hardcore game developers animated by a strong entrepreneurial spirit.
We greatly enjoyed exchanging with Bill Jackson, Steve Chiang, Mark Skaggs, all folks with very impressive gaming pedigrees. Especially, meeting Mark Pincus was a turning point for us.
His passion to define a new way to play and his entrepreneurial drive are very contagious. Jordan and I are excited to work with them every day to build great mid-core multi-platform games and grow this new category together.
We are very excited about this new adventure, and we’re looking forward to launching Solstice Arena as part of Zynga!
As usual, feel free to send us your resumes if you want to join us on this new adventure.
Jordan and I would like to thank our investors and our advisors (David Lawee, David Helgason, Larry Chu, Andrew Trader) for their support, as well as the entire team at A Bit Lucky for all their dedication and hard work!
Thanks!
Cheers,
Frederic & Jordan
Taylor Swift’s Fashion Evolution
Taylor Swift’s Fashion Evolution:
From bohemian country girl to chic Kennedy girlfriend. Here’s a look back at Taylor Swift’s style changes through the years.
Known for inspiring young girls everywhere to embrace the sundress and cowboy boots, Taylor has openly said she’s happy to be a role model.
“Seeing girls coming to my shows wearing sundresses and cowboy boots and curling their hair is one of my favorite experiences ever because I remember when I was weird for dressing the way that I dressed and I was weird for having curly hair,” she said in an interview. “It’s really fun to see that I’m not that weird anymore.”
While rehearsing for a performance at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2007 Taylor was sporting her signature outfit: a yellow sundress and cowboy boots.

Just a year later the singer ditched the boots and opted for sandals and a short dress at the Legendary Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Party in Beverly Hills. Still showing off her blonde, curly locks Taylor looks like she’s ready for a night out on the town dancing with her girlfriends.

In this iconic dress worn at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala, Taylor transforms from girl next door to runway model. Sporting one of her favorite looks (sparkles) she is a sight to see.

The country songstress ditches her sparkles and curls for a little black dress. More rock star chic than country songstress Taylor looks fierce.

At the Grammy Awards in 2012 Taylor looked elegant in a flowing gown with some skin peaking through. With her hair in an updo Taylor looked classy.

Taylor is all grown up posing in the press room of Billboard’s Woman of the Year award event honoring her. In a long red gown and no jewelry, Taylor’s straight blonde locks and bangs are her accessories making her look like she belongs in the pages of a fashion magazine.
