Google acquires Instagram-competitor Snapseed

Google acquires Instagram-competitor Snapseed:
Nik Software, the company behind the popular photography app Snapseed, has been bought by Google today. The search giant plans to bolster its Google+ photo features with the Snapseed acquisition and compete with Facebook and Instagram head on. The app, which is available on iOS, Mac and Windows (with an Android version coming soon), has gained over nine million users within its first year.

To compete with the likes of Facebook and Instagram, Google has added some great image-editing features to Google+ over the past year or so. Features like facial recognition for improved photo tagging and higher-resolution photos are just some of the updates that Google has focused on. Snapseed-like photo editing in the Google+ would certainly put it on par with Facebook and Instagram’s photo capabilities.
Nik Software has been around for almost 17 years creating all sorts of photography software. Snapseed has been one of their more successful projects and it’s easy to see why. The company has made “photography first” their motto and is certain that they will be able to spread their message to millions more with this Google acquisition.
It’s not known exactly what new photo features will come to Google+ with the Snapseed buyout, but Senior Vice President of Engineering at Google+ Vic Gundotra says that they “want to help our users create photos they absolutely love, and in our experience Nik does this better than anyone.” It’ll be interesting to see what Google+ comes up with to further challenge Facebook and Instagram.

HTC One X 5-inch phablet leaked to take on Note

HTC One X 5-inch phablet leaked to take on Note:
If you’re a fan of the Samsung Galaxy Note or the LG Intuition, 5-inch displays and all, you’ll be happy to see the competition continue to mount up with a new addition to the phablet universe from HTC. The following render and a bit of information leaked on the device lead us to believe that HTC will be taking the tall route – a 5-inch display with a whole lot more height than its got width. This device is ready for your palm, if this render is to be believed, while it still delivers a massive display and the full gamut of HTC One greatness – greatness we know and love.

Inside this device you’ll very likely be seeing a dual-core processor from Qualcomm if not the S4 Pro, a quad-core next-level processor from the Snapdragon masters. This device also looks very much to be sporting red flare like we’ve seen on a large cross-section of Verizon/HTC devices which makes us think that there may be some 4G LTE in this monster’s future. This device has also been called the DLX and the 6435LVW.
This device has three capacitive buttons up front near the bottom, a lovely speaker grill up top, and a center-top-mounted camera at the back that will almost certainly be at least 8 megapixels strong. You’ll likely be working with this device with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or – do we dare hope – Android 4.1 Jelly Bean by the end of this year.
This device may very well be shown off at the September 19th event in NYC that’ll have HTC showing off “what’s next”, whatever that may be. Here in this behemoth we’re inclined to believe that HTC is not aiming to be the last one left out of the phablet party. What say you?

Seeking a Reversal of Fortune, Zynga Gets A Bit Lucky

Seeking a Reversal of Fortune, Zynga Gets A Bit Lucky:
Zynga is announcing this afternoon that it has acquired A Bit Lucky, a small game studio that is focused on making “mid-core” games.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it is likely a fairly small deal given that the 20-plus team had raised roughly $8 million in capital over its three years of operations.
To be sure, Zynga is looking for a catalyst to revive its stock, and maybe an acquisition that will allow it to expand beyond light social entertainment into a new genre of games will help.
In an interview, Zynga’s General Manager Bill Jackson said the acquisition will help bolster the company’s ability to make games that appeal to more hardcore players, something it had already been working on internally.
Frederic Descamps, A Bit Lucky’s CEO, said Zynga’s vision for the genre was closely aligned with their roadmap.
“We started as a social games on Facebook, but a few months ago we changed directions to mid-core gaming. Over the past few months, we we’ve been talking about what’s next for us, and how do we make mid-core multiplatform games. In the end, it was pretty clear that it was the best choice of us,” he said.
A Bit Lucky had launched two Facebook games, Lucky Train and Lucky Space. Those two games were shut down recently to focus on its new game, Solstice Arena, which has not launched yet. When it does launch, it will work across multiple platforms, including some combination of mobile, PC and tablet.
While mid-core gaming can have a number of definitions, Descamps said that this is a real-time multiplayer battle game that will be played by gamers across multiple platforms.
Descamps said he was not concerned that Zynga’s mostly casual userbase would not overlap well with the more hardcore users it was seeking.
“I believe Zynga’s audience is several times the size of my country,” said the French native. “They have all sorts of players. I play all kinds of Zynga games, even though I’m a super hardcore player,” he said.

Here is the note that Descamps and Jordan Maynard, the chief creative officer and CTO of A Bit Lucky, plan to send out this afternoon:
Jordan and I have a great piece of news: A Bit Lucky and Zynga are teaming up! Today, Zynga is announcing the acquisition of A Bit Lucky and, as of this week, all 20+ of A Bit Lucky’s employees will become part of Zynga San Francisco.
After exploring various options and talking to a lot of interested partners, Jordan and I are convinced Zynga is the best choice for us. Zynga sees something very special in A Bit Lucky and the team we have assembled.

Likewise, why we picked Zynga is pretty simple: it was truly a meeting of the minds. At Zynga, we met people like us: passionate hardcore game developers animated by a strong entrepreneurial spirit.
We greatly enjoyed exchanging with Bill Jackson, Steve Chiang, Mark Skaggs, all folks with very impressive gaming pedigrees. Especially, meeting Mark Pincus was a turning point for us.
His passion to define a new way to play and his entrepreneurial drive are very contagious. Jordan and I are excited to work with them every day to build great mid-core multi-platform games and grow this new category together.
We are very excited about this new adventure, and we’re looking forward to launching Solstice Arena as part of Zynga!
As usual, feel free to send us your resumes if you want to join us on this new adventure.
Jordan and I would like to thank our investors and our advisors (David Lawee, David Helgason, Larry Chu, Andrew Trader) for their support, as well as the entire team at A Bit Lucky for all their dedication and hard work!
Thanks!

Cheers,

Frederic & Jordan

Taylor Swift’s Fashion Evolution

Taylor Swift’s Fashion Evolution:
From bohemian country girl to chic Kennedy girlfriend. Here’s a look back at Taylor Swift’s style changes through the years.
Known for inspiring young girls everywhere to embrace the sundress and cowboy boots, Taylor has openly said she’s happy to be a role model.
“Seeing girls coming to my shows wearing sundresses and cowboy boots and curling their hair is one of my favorite experiences ever because I remember when I was weird for dressing the way that I dressed and I was weird for having curly hair,” she said in an interview. “It’s really fun to see that I’m not that weird anymore.”
While rehearsing for a performance at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2007 Taylor was sporting her signature outfit: a yellow sundress and cowboy boots.

Just a year later the singer ditched the boots and opted for sandals and a short dress at the Legendary Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Party in Beverly Hills. Still showing off her blonde, curly locks Taylor looks like she’s ready for a night out on the town dancing with her girlfriends.

In this iconic dress worn at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala, Taylor transforms from girl next door to runway model. Sporting one of her favorite looks (sparkles) she is a sight to see.

At the Grammy Awards in 2012 Taylor looked elegant in a flowing gown with some skin peaking through. With her hair in an updo Taylor looked classy.

Taylor is all grown up posing in the press room of Billboard’s Woman of the Year award event honoring her. In a long red gown and no jewelry, Taylor’s straight blonde locks and bangs are her accessories making her look like she belongs in the pages of a fashion magazine.
